Cloudian
How do you explain a band who describe their sound as Korean Epic Rock? How do you express in words that these are possibly some of the best musicians you’ve had the privilege of hearing in years? This could very much sound like lipservice, until you actually hear the guys play live.
Busan based Cloudian was honestly a bit of a shock to the system the first time I heard them. Being a card carrying metal and rock girl, it’s not very often that you stumble over a Korean rock band that truly sounds like themselves. Many of them emulate western groups really well, but they never really dig their heels in and declare who they truly are.
Originally formed in the summer of 2017, the line up has evolved over the years into a tour de force of talent. Brighten on vocals, Liam on guitar, NN on bass, Logan on drums, Han on buk (traditional Korean percussion) and DJ duties and OM on strings. With each member being adept at turning their hands to any instrument they are passed. Fusing classic rock, metalcore, cinematic orchestration, hip-hop and traditional Korean music; the guys aren’t shy at showing who their influences are without paying homage to them.
Want to know how good a musician really is? Ask them to play a cover version, if it’s better than the original you know you’ve stumbled onto something really impressive. And Cloudian knows how to do a cover version. From Liam playing I don’t want to miss a thing to Han’s version of Huntr/X ‘Takedown’ to Brighten’s toe curling rendition of Kings of Leon ‘Use Somebody’
Not only do the band write monumental riffs, emotive lyrics and tight rhythmic grooves; they present the world of Cloudian with a level of precision that would leave many of the larger acts in the world of guitar driven music scratching their heads. Writing, directing and editing their own music videos which wouldn’t look out of place in a blockbuster movie. 2025 ‘Gardener’ being an example of their drive for perfection in all art forms.
I honestly don’t think it will be long before Cloudian are gracing the stages of the world’s biggest rock and metal festivals, and I intend to be their singing along!
